Fashion shows have proven to be an arduous task in 2020. Thanks to the global pandemic, the seasonal fashion calendar had to be cleared in favor of social distancing and, for many designers, production for upcoming collections ground to a halt. By the time show season was on its way around again, many designers were without their spring/summer 2021 stock, or uncertain as to whether their runways could even go ahead.
It’s meant that many designers have opted for a virtual collection showcase instead which, to be honest, suits us just fine. The digitized nature of the runway allows us to soak up all the sartorial fare as we normally would, but live and from the comfort of our couches.
While some, such as Bottega Veneta, opted to show IRL in much smaller settings, Saint Laurent is one such brand that went the live stream route. The French house’s Summer 21 collection is set to debut later on today, directly from Paris to the rest of the globe.
It comes after the heritage brand was the first fashion house to officially pull the plug on its original spring/summer show way back in April. “Saint Laurent will take ownership of its calendar and launch its collections following a plan conceived with an up-to-date perspective,” read a statement released by the luxury label at the time. “Now more than ever, the brand will lead its own rhythm, legitimating the value of time and connecting with people globally by getting closer to them in their own space and lives.”
