Rooney Mara and her partner Joaquin Phoenix are expecting their second child together! Being one of Hollywood’s most notoriously private couples, there was no grand reveal or social post announcing the news, but Mara managed to get the word out.
At the premiere of La Cocina at the Berlin Film Festival in Germany, she stepped onto the red carpet in a strapless black gown that ballooned into a voluminous skirt. Despite the dress’ roomy silhouette, she made the joyous news known by subtly cradling her growing baby bump.
Mara and Phoenix met in 2012 on the set of Her. But it was only four years later that they started dating when they reconnected on the set of the 2018 film Mary Magdalene. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Phoenix confessed that he didn’t think Mara liked him because he was shy and that she was the only romantic interest he ever looked up online.
In 2019, Mara was photographed wearing an engagement ring, but the couple has never confirmed when they became engaged. They then welcomed their first child in September 2020, a boy named River in honour of Phoenix’s late brother.
In a letter released in For a partnership with animal protection organisation Farm Sanctuary, Mara penned a letter that shed some light on the couples’ life as parents.
“As a new mum, Mother’s Day has taken on a special meaning this year,” she wrote. “Raising our baby, River, has opened my heart to a whole new life filled with hope and more determination than ever to create a kinder and more sustainable world.
“I feel so fortunate to be able to nurture my son in all of the ways that nature intended, and I wish all mothers in the animal kingdom could experience that sacred maternal bond with their young, devoid of exploitation by humans.”
The pair have yet to share any details regarding their second child, but we’re guessing those won’t come anytime soon.
