With gorgeous looks, model features, and a dedicated following of hundreds of thousands of fans, Alexandra Bokova’s career could easily have been confined to catwalks, influencer photoshoots, or magazine covers. But far from letting herself be pigeonholed, this young emerging actress has set about making a name for herself in indie cinema. Now, with her new film Alien Planet set to be released, she’s out to prove that she’s a truly versatile performer in front of the camera.
As with just about everyone in the world, the last few years have been a bit of a whirlwind for Alexandra Bokova.
Having set about pursuing an acting career full-time, 2019 became a pivotal year for the young rising talent.
This was the year that Alexandra landed herself the leading role in Mermaid Down — a dark, ambitious, psychologically-intense take on the mermaid tale, with director Jeffrey Grellman at the helm.
In the film, Bokova plays the character of “The Mermaid.” Ripped from the ocean, unable to communicate with humankind, and with her tail chopped off, Alexandra’s character is thrown in a mental hospital by a society which treats “otherness” with fear and brutality. In this confined state, she struggles to convince people about her fantastical nature.
The actress won praise for her starring role, which was both harrowing and redemptive. Released just before Covid, it was the first cinema showcasing of Alexandra Bokova’s scene-stealing power.

Much like her character in Mermaid Down, the real Alexandra Bokova can also seem mythic, mysterious, and – above all – difficult to pin down. In interviews, the Russian- American actress coyly admits that she prefers not to reveal too much about herself – and she’s also more than happy to keep a low profile when it comes to social media.
There are good reasons for this. Chief among them is the fact that Alexandra plans on being an incredibly versatile actress – and she doesn’t want to see herself being pigeon-holed in any way (especially in a digital world where people tend to pay too much attention to the superficial).
When asked about her acting inspirations, she points to her grandmother, the renowned Russian stage actress Alla Bokova. She also points to the legendary Russian-American actor Yul Brynner. And while this might seem like an unusual
choice, it makes perfect sense once you consider just how magnificent Brynner was in adapting himself to an incredibly wide range of roles – often masking himself in his characters and going to great lengths to fully embody them.
For Alexandra – as with all the best actors – the pinnacle of this art form is about fully removing yourself and fully becoming your character.
Following the difficulties of Covid – which caused massive upheavals in the acting world – Alexandra has come out with her latest project, which will likely see her star continuing to rise.
Alexandra will play the role of ‘Lock’ in the new film Alien Planet, which is scheduled for release later this year. Directed by Alan Maxson, the film is an indie sci-fi which follows aliens on a mission to secure the future of their planets as their natural resources dwindle.
A significant amount of prosthetics and make-up have played a part in completely transforming Alexandra into her alien character. Promo pictures of Alien Planet have already caused a stir, both with the actress’ fans and with those who are just starting to learn about her career. With blue-purple reptilian-esque skin, a blood-soaked face, and chains around her neck, audiences are set to see Alexandra in an utterly different way from what they might have expected based on her smattering of aesthetically pleasing Instagram pics.
Alexandra enjoys the thrill of letting audiences see a different side of her with each and every role. For her, there’s a thespian excitement that comes from having multitudes; from being the beautiful face, to being the desperate mermaid in Mermaid Down, to being the humorous odd-one-out in the 2022 comedy Figure It Out, and now – to being the outlandish alien in Alien Planet.
The actress is currently promoting the release of Alien Planet, giving media outlets, journalists, and fans the chance to experience her razor-sharp intelligence and wit face-to-face.
In the meantime, we hope she continues to take on ambitious acting roles and look forward to seeing a lot more of Alexandra Bokova in the near future.
