Rafa Nadal says people now choose trips over houses; see how his Zel Hotels bet, housing costs and the experience economy reshape your savings choices.

You know that group chat split between “I’m booking Lisbon” and “I’m checking mortgage calculators”? Rafa Nadal just waded straight into that argument, uninvited and extremely sure of himself. The 22-time Grand Slam winner has opinions about your savings goals. Specifically, whether you should be hoarding cash for a house or blowing it on a plane ticket and a really good caipirinha. And unlike your cousin at brunch, he has built an entire hotel brand on his answer.

The Quote That Lit Up The Group Chat

Speaking to Tania Bryer on CNBC Meets with Tania Bryer while opening a new Zel Hotels property in Fuerteventura, Nadal laid out what he sees as a generational plot twist.

“Before, people tried to save money to buy a car or a house. Now, people value experiences a lot and invest in traveling and seeing different places,” Nadal says. A beat later, he doubles down. “People’s mindsets have changed a lot,” Nadal says.

It is a neat, slightly loaded soundbite. Overnight, it became shorthand for a bigger tension: Rafa Nadal, experiences vs buying a house, and whether plane tickets are the new starter home.

From Living In Hotels To Owning Them

The Birth Of Zel Hotels

Nadal is not just philosophizing from a clay court. He has spent more than two decades living out of suitcases, shuttling between tournaments and training camps. “That is what I did for half my life, and I know what I love most,” Nadal says.

In 2022, he turned that informal PhD in room service into Zel Hotels, co-founding the brand with Meliá Hotels International. The concept: Mediterranean lifestyle bottled into a hotel – think courtyard energy, late dinners, morning sea swims, not anonymous beige carpeting.

The first opening, ZEL Mallorca in 2023, was followed by Costa Brava and Punta Cana, with a fourth hotel in Fuerteventura. Zel is not selling a bed; it is selling how you feel for 72 hours between check-in and check-out.

Betting On The Experience Economy

Nadal’s own portfolio backs that worldview. Alongside Zel, there is Rafa Nadal Academy and a string of sports and education projects. “In the same way I built a legacy on the court, now is the moment to build a legacy outside of the court,” Nadal says. For him, that legacy lives in places you travel to, not things you park in your driveway.

Experiences Vs Assets: What The Numbers Suggest

Travel Spending Is Having A Moment

If Nadal’s quote sounds like something your friends repeat over Negronis, it is also sitting on top of real data. In the US, spending on travel, hotels, and recreation has surged back past pre-2020 levels, according to federal economic figures. Airlines are full, PTO calendars are chaotic, and “revenge travel” has settled into a lifestyle, not a phase.

Surveys from consultancies like Deloitte keep finding the same thing: Gen Z and millennials are more likely to say they would rather spend on experiences than on physical stuff. Translation – concert tickets and long weekends are winning over jewelry and yet another side table.

Meanwhile, The Starter Home Drifted Out Of Frame

The plot twist is that this is not happening in a vacuum. Home prices hit record highs while mortgage rates flirted with 7 percent in 2023, according to the Federal Reserve and the National Association of Realtors. Saving a 20 percent down payment on a median-priced home can feel like training for a marathon that never ends.

So yes, some people are choosing Santorini over a security deposit. But many look at the math, realize the house is not happening this decade, and decide to buy memories instead of despair. What reads as careless can be a rational response to a rigged-looking game.

Is Rafa Right About “New Generations”?

Nadal’s line about young people valuing trips and experiences more hits a nerve, partly because it is recognizably true. Scroll your feed: fewer “sold our first place!” posts, more Maldives boomerangs and remote-work-in-Mexico flexes.

Psychologists will tell you experiences tend to deliver longer-lasting happiness than objects. They create stories, strengthen relationships, and resist going out of style. No one has to “declutter” a weekend in Fuerteventura.

At the same time, experiences are social capital. It is not just the trip – it is the photos, the dating-app anecdotes, the sense that you are not missing the plot of your own life. Zel Hotels is built to monetize that exact feeling of “I want to be the woman in that sun-drenched courtyard shot.”

The Backlash: Easy To Say When You Own Hotels

Of course, the criticism writes itself. It is convenient for a multimillionaire hotel owner to frame the problem as young people splurging on trips instead of saving for houses. Comment sections have been quick to point out that no amount of skipped weekends away is going to fix decades of wage stagnation or student debt.

They have a point. Structural issues – from limited housing supply to higher borrowing costs – matter more than your choice between Porto and Palm Springs. The latte-shaming of the 2010s has simply shape-shifted into flight-shaming, and women hear it the loudest.

The more generous read is that Nadal is clocking a mindset shift, not assigning blame. People are optimizing for a life that feels rich now because the old promise – buy a house young, watch it appreciate, retire comfortably – is wobblier.

What To Do With Your Own Savings Goals

So where does that leave you, your savings app, and your Google Flights alerts?

One way to stress-test your priorities is to split your money into three buckets: essentials, future security, and experiences. Essentials keep the lights on. Future security is retirement accounts, a potential down payment, any “I want options later” fund. Experiences are the things that make the present feel worth living – from travel to that pottery class that secretly costs as much as rent.

If future security has nothing in it, that is your red flag, no matter how spiritual the yoga retreat looks. If it is reasonably padded and housing feels centuries away, it may be perfectly rational to book the trip and collect the story.

Nadal is right about one thing: people’s mindsets have changed. The real question is not trips or house. It is whether you are spending on experiences that align with the life you want, instead of just curating a feed that looks like everyone else’s.
