April 9th, 2021: Prince Philip passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle, at age 99. To announce The Duke of Edinburgh’s death, the royal family upheld tradition by placing a notice outside Buckingham Palace. Additionally, they shared the news with the world via a statement posted to their website that reads as follows:

“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”

Flowers, notes, and more sentiments are being left at the gates of Buckingham Palace, Balmoral Castle in Scotland, and at the Cambridge Gate at Windsor Castle to pay respects to the monarch. The Duke of Edinburgh retired from his royal duties in 2017, and he holds the esteemed title of the longest-serving royal consort in British history. The news of his death comes just weeks after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, where the couple discusses intimate details living as royals and the deep-rooted racism within the institution and British tabloids.

To pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth’s late husband’s legacy, GRAZIA is taking a look back at the royal couple’s 74 years of marriage. Scroll through the photos below for an emotional trip back in time.
