On Sunday, two new interviews aired featuring Prince Harry discussing his new memoir, Spare. In an interview with journalist Anderson Cooper for 60 Minutes, he discussed how he dealt with the death of his mother, Princess Diana, recounted the explosive fight with his brother Prince William in 2019, and revealed that through everything, he still very much wants a relationship with his family. During his conversation with ITV journalist Tom Bradby, he opened up about what really went down between the “royal fab four” when his wife Meghan Markle joined the family.
In his discussion with Bradby, Prince Harry said there were “lots of reason” why Prince William and Kate Middleton didn’t immediately hit it off with Meghan from the get-go.
“I had put a lot of hope in the idea that, you know, be William and Kate and me and whoever — I thought that the, you know, the four of us would, you know, bring me and William closer together. We could go out and do work together,” Harry said. “Um, which I did a lot as the third wheel to them, um, which was fun at times, but also I guess slightly awkward at times as well.”
He said that he didn’t think either expected him to be with someone like Meghan, who was divorced, biracial and had “a very successful career.”
“Some of the things that my brother and sister-in-law, some of the way that they were acting or behaving, definitely felt to me as though, unfortunately, that stereotyping was causing a bit of a barrier to them really sort of introducing or welcoming her in,” Harry shared.
So all the talk of the “fab four” he says was invented by the British press so “they could then dissect, or again, it builds, it creates competition as well, right? The idea of the four of us being together was always a hope for me. Before it was Megan, whoever it was gonna be, I always hoped that the four of us would get on, but very quickly it became Megan versus Kate. And that when it plays out so publicly, you can’t hide from that.”
In Prince Harry’s new memoir, Spare, it’s reported that he wrote about the tension between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton leading up to Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018. According to the The DailyMail, Harry wrote that Meghan said that Kate “must have baby brain because of her hormones.” At the time, Kate had recently given birth to her third child with Prince William, Prince Louis.
“In the book Harry says that there was a discussion about the timing of the wedding rehearsal and the flower girl dresses and Kate was very upset,” the outlet’s source said. “It caused a huge row because Meghan was told that she wasn’t close enough to her sister-in-law to discuss her hormones and it wasn’t the way people spoke to each other within the royal family.”
Page Six also reported that the tension stemmed from Kate being upset with Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress. It reported that Kate told Meghan that Charlotte “burst into tears when she tried it on” because it was “too big, long and baggy.”
Instead of remaking the dress, which is reportedly what Kate suggested, they visited a tailor and Kate apologized with flowers and a card. But the whole thing left Meghan “on the floor” in tears, Harry reportedly wrote.
