When Penn Badgley‘s murderous, narcissistic and stalker-ish character Joe Goldberg first appeared on our screens in Netflix’s You in 2018, we quickly became obsessed. For some, the obsession was a little too intense. In the past Badgley has spoken out against fans who have swooned, if not praised the problematic character. But when he was tagged in a recent thirst tweet following season three, his reaction was a little different.

On October 19 one fan tagged Badgley and wrote, “Ayoooo kidnap me.” The actor swiftly responded, “Idk why but when ‘kidnap me’ is prefaced by ‘ayoooo,’ it has a completely different ring to it and I’m not mad.”

There’s a reason that we’ve got a tendency to side with the bad guy. According to showrunner Sera Gamble in an older interview, the intentions of Goldberg are somewhat aligned to our own in the quest for love (minus the serial killer part).

“Our romantic notion of what love is supposed to be is a little bit unhealthy because of the culture,” she told GRAZIA. “The show is a fun way to explore that from the perspective of a guy who has taken things way too far. But his intentions seem to be pretty closely aligned with many of us – he wants to meet the right person, he wants to be a good partner, he wants to love and be loved – he is just a little unhinged about it.”

You may have noticed that Badgley’s Twitter account also featured Cardi B as the profile picture. Apparently, they’re both die-hard fans of one another.

In a press interview for season three of You, the actor praised the artist for her genuine relationship to social media. “It’s this incredibly nuanced place to be, and despite what many might judge as ‘antics,’ she has an incredibly authentic relationship to [social media], and that’s why people like her so much,” he said.

Cardi B responded to the video which was published to Twitter, writing excitedly, “OOOOMMFFFGGGGGG HE KNOWS ME !!! OMMMGGGG!!!!!!Yoooo like I’m famous famous.”

Just as the third season of You hit Netflix, it was renewed for a fourth season.
