Black leather, a wooden sole and a very New York way of wearing them: the shoe making a quiet comeback this fall. Every fall, the same two shoes fight for the top spot: the loafer and the ankle boot. Both are practical, polished and endlessly copied. But on the set of one of the most anticipated films of next year, Sarah Jessica Parker has been wearing something else entirely.
The shoe is the clog, and on her, it looks anything but old-fashioned.
Back on Set in New York
In late October, filming began in New York on the sequel to The Family Stone, the 2005 holiday comedy written and directed by Thomas Bezucha, who returns for the new film. Parker, 61, is back as Meredith Morton, alongside returning cast members including Dermot Mulroney, Claire Danes, Luke Wilson and Rachel McAdams.
On set, Parker’s character wore black leather clogs identified as Swedish Hasbeens, reportedly styled with cropped trousers and a sweater, and on another occasion with a black dress and a long gray coat. Even as a costume, the look felt instantly wearable off screen.
Why Clogs Are Back
Clogs never fully disappeared, but for years they were seen as a practical shoe for nurses, chefs and gardeners rather than a fashion statement. That changed when Miu Miu sent garden-style clogs down its Paris runway, and since then, versions have appeared everywhere from high-street stores to luxury labels.
Their appeal is easy to understand. A clog has the comfort of a flat with a little extra height from its sole, it is easy to slip on, and its chunky shape balances wide or cropped trousers. In black leather, it reads more polished than rustic.
What Makes Parker’s Version Work
The secret is the styling. With cropped trousers, the clog becomes the focal point, and a sweater keeps the look relaxed. With a black dress and a long coat, it adds an unexpected, slightly bohemian edge to an otherwise classic outfit. It is the same kind of high-low mix that made Carrie Bradshaw’s wardrobe so memorable, just more grown-up.
How to Wear Clogs This Fall
With cropped trousers: choose straight or wide cropped pants that end above the ankle, so the shape of the clog shows. Add a fine knit or a crisp shirt.
With a dress: pair black clogs with a black midi dress and opaque tights, then finish with a long wool coat, as Parker did.
With jeans: straight jeans with a slight crop and visible socks, in gray, cream or burgundy, make clogs feel modern and cozy.
Keep to black or dark brown leather for the most versatile pair. Closed-back styles are easier for colder months, while open-back mules work for transitional days.
Where to Find a Pair
Clogs are available at every budget. Swedish Hasbeens, the brand linked to Parker’s on-set pair, is known for wooden-soled leather styles. Dansko offers comfortable classics often recommended for long days on your feet, while designer labels including Miu Miu sell runway versions at luxury prices. When buying, look for a supportive footbed and make sure your heel sits securely, especially on open-back styles.
Not loafers, not boots: on the set of The Family Stone sequel, Sarah Jessica Parker is making the case for the clog, and it may be the most unexpected fall shoe worth trying.
