People who raise children often give so much of themselves at the expense of themselves. The world demands a lot of the mothers in our lives without providing the proper infrastructure for them to maintain their whole selves (both in and out of the home) and while we don’t need a holiday to celebrate them, we’re going to take this upcoming Sunday, Mother’s Day, as an opportunity to do so. Personally, speaking, the community of women who have mothered me — and I’m not talking about the ‘proverbial village,’ I specifically mean my mom, my maternal grandmother, my Godmom — loved on me while living full lives to the best of their ability that were independent of their child rearing and duties in the home. In turn, they taught me to develop my own personality and interests outside of my romantic and/or familial goals. Now, I’m not actually sure that there is a Hallmark card with these exact sentiments, so please allow me to fall back on presents to speak for us.
