I love a leggy one-piece swimsuit as much as I love sipping on a piña colada on a tropical vacation (read: a lot). Admittedly, though, I’ve never worn a cutout style à la Kim Kardashian—one that looks like a bikini initially, but upon further speculation, is a jazzed-up one-piece like the Skim founder’s (as seen above). The mom of four just joined the growing list of celebrities who’ve embraced the monokini trend recently, and we’re calling it now: you can expect to see the style all over the beach and your personal Instagram feed for summer 2021.
What I love about the trend (and the reason why I have seven shopping tabs full of them open at the moment) is that you can opt for a modest monokini for a subtle take on the trend or a barely-there style if you’re excited to show skin. For example: Kardashian’s high-cut midriff-baring swimsuit falls somewhere between casual and über-sexy, while Lori Harvey’s silhouette features a more dramatic cutout midsection and a top inspired by the polarizing upside-down bikini trend.
Take note: This trend isn’t exclusive to swimwear; it’s just a hot tiouc of conversation now that we’re easing out of sweaters and into lighter garments. Cutouts owned the Spring-Summer 2021 runways, as seen on the catwalk at Prada, Gabriela Heart, and Kenzo—just to name a few. Interest in the style coincidentally aligned with the nation’s COVID-19 vaccination rollout, and thus, cutout, cold-shoulder silhouettes have been nicknamed “vaccine tops.” Perhaps this goes without saying, but it’s been a weird year.
