During a time in which comfort has become the cornerstone of our wardrobes, who hasn’t dreamed of slipping into a fanciful frock? Now, such sartorial fantasies are taking on new dimensions thanks to the London-based designer Molly Goddard, who revealed her larger-than-life Fall 2021 collection this past weekend at her expansive Bethnal Green studio.

“I am quite fed up of seeing leggings and black puffa jackets for walks in the park,” she wrote in a press release, noting that she drew inspiration from art books such as Tina Barney’s Europeans and David Douglas Duncan’s Goodbye Picasso, as well as 15 years’ worth photocopied research. Instead, she continued, “pieces in this collection are for celebrating and enjoying.”

Who wouldn’t delight in the season’s knockout strapless tulle dresses (even, if only, worn while at home)? Paired with gold knee-high platform boots and a sweep of head-turning fluorescent blush, they were the picture of an exuberance that’s been largely absent since COVID-19 first brought the world to a standstill nearly a year ago. “I loved the idea of making the ultimate dresses, based on classic prom or party dresses that are so recognizable, but a little twisted,” she said of the vibrant lineup, which also welcomed a handful of traditionally British styles—with Goddard’s signature, subversive twist, of course. Think: electric-colored Fair Isle knits; pink herringbone tweed mini skirt suits; and lace up leather worn over layers of patterned socks and tights.

Goddard sums up the 33 looks as “long lasting, but spiced up wardrobe classics.” In today’s day and age, as many of us have placed a newfound emphasis on investing in thoughtful, thrilling designs that can simultaneously lift our spirits and stand the test of time, it’s a winning equation, no doubt.
