This month marks a year since many of us have ventured outside of our cities and hometowns, but today designer Miuccia Prada took us on a retreat—albeit of the virtual sort—to the snow-covered mountains of Italy’s Cortina d’Ampezzo. It was here, in the heart of the Dolomites, that Miu Miu staged its new Fall 2021 collection, which debuted this morning via a 8-minute short film released. “It is about escape, about dreaming—making fantasy a reality,” a statement read of the show’s starting points. And what better way to live out our cold-weather reveries than dressed in the season’s fashion-forward extreme sportswear?

According to the French fashion house, “garments can challenge perception and context,” thanks to the collection’s otherworldly hazardous terrain setting. “The practical is romanced through exaggeration… the fragile can be reinvented to become brave,” the press release continues. “The utilitarian can become beautiful and pleasurable; the decorative can suddenly have reason, new purpose.”

Matching padded parkas and pants sets come in soft lingerie-inspired shades of pastel; handbags and arm warmers alike are invitingly furry, as are a pair of over-the-knee—over-the-top, too—yeti-esque boots that are seemingly made for the sartorial adventurers of Instagram; and alpine-ready slip dresses, cut from heavy wool or delicate satin, are paired with protective ski masks, of which Ella Emhoff, Kamala Harris’s stepdaughter, is already a fan. This afternoon, the budding fashion icon took to Instagram to share a photo of a chubby knit version, followed by one in Pepto Bismol pink. “I am crying,” she wrote, tagging the brand and the season’s stylist, Lotta Volkova. Consider it the ultimate stamp of approval—and one that indicates that these toppers will surely be seen on the streets of New York City, D.C., and beyond next winter.
