From its conception in 2016, Miaou has been a brand where cool-girl trends and sustainability have been intertwined. A design skill that is undoubtedly easier said than done, however designer Alexia Elkaim nails it to a tee. On July 22, the brand launched its Fall/Winter 2021 collection, continuing to reimagine each piece with an original fit and novel flare. The new release is inspired by summers in the city, with vibrant prints that can be worn all day into wherever warm nights take you.
Miaou, is a direct translation of “Meow” in french and pronounced the same (in case you were wondering). Matching sets and corsets are at the core DNA of the cool cat and kitten brand’s identity. “Miaou is about liberation, we design clothes with the intention of making women feel like the best versions of themselves,” says designer Elkaim. “We do our best to design with intention, integrity, and with the earth in mind. Sustainable fashion doesn’t have to be boring.”
The pieces are easy to wear while also making a statement (just ask Hailey Bieber, who already got her hands on the newly launched collection). Along with Bieber, fellow it-girls Bella Hadid, Billie Eillish, Paloma Elsesser, Kim Kardashian and more have all been spotted in the LA-based label’s designs.
Elkaim’s starting inspiration differed a bit from what the brand has become today. She created it out of a personal need for a novel pair of jeans with the perfect fit for her curvy body. The first Miaou piece was a single pair of pants with a single embellished detail, the grommet. When talking about showing off perfect curves, naturally, corsets come into the conversation.
To be more sustainable, Miaou uses locally sourced deadstock fabric and practicing production methods with less water wastage, so you not only look good but feel good too. Ahead, shop GRAZIA’s favorite pieces from the collection.
