The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, have announced that they are expecting their second child. The couple released an official statement on Valentine’s Day, along with a sweet snap of the pair cuddled up with Markle’s growing belly on show, which was captured remotely on an iPad by longtime photographer and friend, Misan Harriman.
“We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child,” a spokesperson said in the statement. They are yet to reveal any further details about the latest pregnancy, from the due date to the sex of the impending royal arrival.
Harriman shared the loved-up snap he took to his Instagram page, writing, “Meg, I was there at your wedding to witness this love story begin, and my friend, I am honoured to capture it grow. Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on this joyous news!” In the image, Markle is seen re-wearing a flowing Carolina Herrera dress, which was made for her by the house’s creative director, Wes Gordon, during her pregnancy with baby Archie.
It’s been a tumultuous year for the pair, who in the space of twelve months have stepped down from their roles as senior royals and moved to the U.S. with Archie, who is set to turn two in May. The pregnancy news no doubt feels particularly joyous given 39-year-old Markle’s recent heartbreaking miscarriage.
In a first-person essay for The New York Times, Markle detailed the “unbearable grief” she and her 36-year-old husband felt at the loss. The Duchess said she was holding her young son, when she felt a “sharp cramp” and dropped to the floor holding Archie in her arms. “I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second,” she wrote.
