Next to the hospitality industry, one of the spaces that has been hit particularly hard by the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis is the retail industry. For many, we’ve seen stores temporarily suspend their in-store experiences in lieu of online shopping and sadly for some, we’ve seen permanent storefront closures. In the big business of a pandemic, fashion isn’t deemed as essential.

Scanlan Theodore – the Australian label synonymous with zipless silhouettes and quality fabrics – has felt the brunt of the crisis with its stores temporarily closing in New York City and in Oz. But the brand’s generosity and Australian spirit has seen the label knuckle down and repurpose their factories to produce urgent medical supplies.

“In response to the current global crisis, Scanlan Theodore are repurposing our factory in Fiji to manufacture Personal Protective Equipment, starting with gowns which are now in urgent demand worldwide,” says a statement, released on the brand’s Instagram. “Our team has sourced the appropriate medical textiles and are moving forward with this commitment immediately.” ⠀⠀

“As a company, we would like to express our gratitude to our dedicated design and production teams who have exhibited strength, unity and efficiency in a collective effort to support this cause,“ it continued. “Let us move forward together with kindness, consideration, and a sense of community we can be proud of. We are in this together.”

On a lighter note, Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle has made many an appearance in Scanlan Theodore. Recently she was spotted in the label’s navy crepe knit cravat dress at a meeting with young scholars at Buckingham Palace; one of her last Royal Engagements before stepping down as a senior Royal member. You can still buy the dress here.
