After fielding invites to lavish Hollywood parties, Margot Robbie and her husband Tom Ackerley have chosen an independent film ceremony, the 2023 Gotham Awards, as the location for a rare date night.

For the occasion, the actress, who was not nominated for anything during the star-studded evening, eschewed her signature Barbiecore silhouette for something more nostalgic. Taking cues from old Hollywood starlets like Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly, the 33-year-old opted for a timeless satin Prada dress for her night in New York City.

The body-conscious gown featured a modest calf-grazing length, a strapless finish and two parallel darts that emphasised the classic shape of the garment. Adding an extra element of theatrics—this is an event for actors, after all—Robbie adorned her look with a diaphanous cape that provided a ‘femme fatale’ touch to the ensemble.

Ackerley, on the other hand, looked to a more relaxed navy suit. The couple, who both served as executive producers on Barbie through their production company LuckyChap Entertainment, attended the awards to support Ryan Gosling’s nomination in the “Outstanding Supporting Performance” category as “Ken”.

Though the awards typically recognise independent, arthouse or conventionally alternative films, Robbie and Ackerly were amongst a slew of Hollywood heavyweights who attended, including Robbie’s former Once Upon A Time In Hollywood… and The Wolf Of Wall Street co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio.

Barbie director Greta Gerwig was present at the event, while Laura Dern, who had stared in Gerwig’s 2019 adaption of Little Women pledged her support to the film—which has been confirmed as the highest-grossing production of 2023—by wearing her own Barbie t-shirt.

The Australian actress married the English native (and one-time Harry Potter star) at a secret ceremony in Byron Bay in 2016. Like the covert nuptials, the pair have kept their relationship incredibly low-key, often not even appearing on the red carpet together and rarely being spotted in public.

Ackerly and Robbie were previously in Australia to promote their coastal-inspired gin, Papa Salt, at a slew of events before flying back to Los Angeles to attend the premiere of Saltburn.
