Two years after she closed Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2021 runway as the ‘Chanel Bride’ in a cropped veil and long-sleeve gown, the actress has gotten married for real.
Wedding musician Jack Antonoff, 39, the 28-year-old surprised fans with a low-key nuptials held in the groom’s hometown of New Jersey. In photos, the bride can be seen beaming as she walks hand-in-hand with her new husband in a Marilyn Monroe-inspired halter sheath dress by Chanel.
What really surprised us all, though, was Qualley’s choice of footwear.
The idea of wedding shoes often conjures ideas of opulent stilettos adorned with crystals and intricate details à la Mach & Mach or Manolo Blahnik. But to go with her midi-length wedding dress, the actress eschewed conventional pumps for something a little more comfortable: Mary Jane flats.
Not only were these the shoe of choice for her big day, but from photos shared by her sister, Rainey Qualley, it seems the Maid star has quite an affinity for the versatile silhouette, also wearing a pair of flat Mary Janes for her rehearsal dinner. Wearing a scoop-neck white puff-sleeve tea-length dress with a tiered skirt, the shoes brought home the vintage glamour she was channelling.
Qualley joins a slew of other celebrities and trendsetters who have opted for flats on their wedding day, including Zoë Kravitz, Keira Knightley, Mandy Moore and Beauty editor Tish Weinstock.
Just as flattering and elegant as heels but with none of the discomfort or hindrances on the dancefloor, flats make for the perfect alternative footwear for the modern bride. As we begin to see weddings take all forms, many opting for smaller, more low-key affairs over traditional extravaganzas, it’s no wonder this new perspective has reached our feet.
