Like all of us, Madison Beer’s skincare routine has evolved over the years. The 21-year-old singer and world-famous social media star has 22 million Instagram followers, which is a number so high, it’s hard to comprehend. With that many people watching her every move, she’s no stranger to criticism from strangers, be it on her music, style, or her everyday skincare routine.

In an exclusive interview with GRAZIA in May 2020, the New York native opened up to us about the challenges of being in the spotlight. “It becomes really overwhelming at times and I wouldn’t say I would change anything but there’s definitely times I wish I didn’t have such a big following; I wish I could go out without thinking, oh am I going to get photographed?”

Beer continues, “I caught myself altering how I dressed and how I perceived myself, which I don’t think is very fair .… I stopped really caring, but it’s hard when you have a ton of people criticizing you for just being human.” As someone who has to give myself a pep talk every time someone criticizes me, I can’t even imagine what it’s like to be her.

Beer’s Most Recently Documented Skincare Routine

The singer shared an updated version of her nighttime skincare routine over the summer of 2020 via Instagram Live. She starts by taking her makeup off with Neutrogena Makeup Remover Night Calming Cleansing Wipes before washing her face with either Kiehl’s Blue Herbal Acne Cleanser or Mario Badescu Glycolic Foaming Cleanser. After that, she applies Mario Badescu Witch Hazel & Rosewater Toner. She finishes with Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil and Sunday Riley Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream. It’s likely that her routine has since changed in the months following.

Beer has yet to share her updated routine for 2021. It’s extremely likely that she’s updated the aforementioned product list, especially when a trusted skincare specialist virtually stepped in to politely offer suggestions on ways to tweak her regimen.

the internet’s response to beer’s skincare routine

While recording the video of her skincare routine, followers live-commented as she walked them through each of the steps, first panicking over Beer’s use of makeup-remover wipes and then, Mario Badescu. Upon noticing the comments, she said, “People love to talk shit, but this cleanser’s worked for me!” It’s hard to argue with that logic.

After Beer shared her routine, internet-famous skincare specialist Hyram Yarbro posted a video critiquing her regimen. For the record: few celebs go unscathed when it comes to his skincare reviews. The Hawaii resident is known for commenting on stars’ routines in an informative yet respectful way. He, too, doesn’t recommend wipes, and he’s not particularly fond of Mario Badescu’s formulas. His beef with wipes is because they are irritating on the skin and harmful to the environment, and Mario Badescu, because of its high concentration of synthetic fragrances.

Nevertheless, Yarbro notes that he would never discourage a fan from using a product that’s changed their skin for the better. “I’m not gonna be like ‘um, no you still need to get rid of that, unless it has severely irritating ingredients,” says the famed YouTuber. “99 percent of the time, I’m gonna be like, ‘yeah, stick with that, stay with that product, it’s obviously working great for you.'”

In response to Yarbro’s video, Beer watched it live for her own Instagram followers, admitting that she didn’t realize how aggressively she was rubbing her eyes with her makeup wipes, and consequently irritating them. “I’m gonna DM him and ask him for a list of better products that he recommends, but I’m happy he did that because I feel like I needed that. I needed someone to tell me, ‘Don’t use makeup wipes and also don’t forget to double-cleanse.'”

taking advice from her followers

As tough as people can be on Beer, she’s reached out for skincare advice in the past. In 2017 (a year before Yarbro launched his now-famous YouTube account), Beer struggled with acne flareups so bad that she reached out to her Twitter followers for help. On September 10, she tweeted, “Fam my skin is the worst it’s ever been rn. I need all the help I can get.”

After studying up on users’ comments, the “Selfish” singer developed a new regimen. Two months after her initial plea for help, she tweeted, “Okay so clearisil or however u spell it SAVED ME. rapid action scrub / face wash / pads. i put murad acne spot treatment on my pimples while they were still bad. now that i’m clearing up i use all the same & a moisture bomb moisturizer / miceller water to remove makeup.”
