I know we’re about a week or so early to the celebrity Halloween costume coverage, but it looks like Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker have gotten an early start on the spooky festivities, but is anyone really surprised? They’ve been attending spooky events since September, and they’ve really made a splash as one of the most iconic alternative-style couples in the game right now. But now, they seem to be paying homage to another alternative and punk couple, Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, but the story of Sid and Nancy is a little more complicated than that.
Kourtney posted a series of photos to her Instagram page of the couple dressed as Sid and Nancy, with Kourtney in blonde, bombshell curly wig, leather pants and a fishnet top, while Travis wore a leather jacket in all black with a pin that read “I’m a mess,” complete with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth.
And while at first glance, this reference may just seem like an innocent homage to another alternative celebrity couple, the story is actually quite dark for those who don’t know.
Vicious was the bassist of the British punk band The Sex Pistols, and he’s long been a reluctant icon for the new-age punk movement, considered one of the founding fathers of the aesthetic we see referenced today. He met Spungen while he was working with The Sex Pistols, and when he moved on to his solo career, she became his “manager.”
But in 1978, Nancy ultimately ended up meeting a tragic fate in a hotel bathroom that the couple shared. Sid was charged with her death but ultimately died himself before the case could go to trial.
So it’s an interesting choice for Kourtney and Travis to say the least, but it’s on brand with their edgy aesthetic.
