For the Vanity Fair Oscars Afterparty, Kendall Jenner turned to the archives of one of her favorite designers, Jean Paul Gaultier, appearing on the red carpet in a mermaid fish scale dress that was originally debuted in the French fashion house’s Spring/Summer 2008 Haute Couture collection.
Not only was Jenner having a vintage moment, but she was also channeling Academy Awards history: the first person to wear the dress back in 2008 was French actress Marion Cotillard, who wore an ivory version of the exact same dress when she won Best Actress at the Oscars for her portrayal of Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose.

Jenner’s version, which featured the same 3D rosette detail at the bust and a crisscross back, was made in a shimmery golden bronze color, which accentuated the fish-like scales covering the dress.
Whereas Cotillard wore her hair in loose waves and wore long necklaces when she debuted hers, making sure to keep the piece the centre of attention, Jenner was accessories-free, bar a pair of simple earrings, wearing her hair up in a very early aughts Pamela Anderson-inspired messy updo with plenty of strands framing her face.

It sounds like Jenner’s look impressed more than those obsessed with her channeling Cotillard, too. After the Vanity Fair party, the model headed to Beyoncé and Jay Z’s event and was spotted leaving to head home in the same car as rapper Bad Bunny, who she’s been rumored to have been dating for the past few weeks.
