New York City may be a fashion capital but when it comes to off-duty looks, but real New Yorkers lean into practicality over trends — especially in its arctic months.
Chelsea native and purveyor of the viral Khaite cardigan-bra combo, Katie Holmes is a regular in low key ensembles as evident by her recent look on the city’s streets: padded coat, slouchy pants, bobby socks, sneakers and an oversized tote.

Take a closer look at her bag. The handbag tide is indeed turning on the micro bag trend of the last couple of years. According to the Spring 2023 runways (read: Bottega Veneta, Hermés, Balenciaga, Sportmax, the list goes on), the larger-than-life bag is back: totes, hobos, clutches, messengers.

Served with an air of nonchalance from the 44-year-old actress, the casual affair is reminiscent of Holmes’ other viral moment: the bustier atop the jeans and sneakers at the 2022 iHeart Radio Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden in December.
“We decided the rich colour and subtle bustier effect detailing of the top was elegant and would be fun if paired with jeans, creating a more youthful feel for Jingle Ball and the atmosphere there,” Holmes’ stylist Brie Welch said, defending the look to a very important sartorial investigation by the New York Times.
“On the day of (and because Katie has her own effortless style that should be appreciated here), she said she wanted to wear sneakers, because it was a concert and obviously there would be a lot of dancing to Dua Lipa (and nothing is more comfortable!)”

In the spirit of practicality, we rounded up some new season black leather bags, a stylish touch while you peruse town in your bobby socks and sneakers no less.
