Last night’s premiere for the new James Bond movie, No Time To Die, at the Royal Albert Hall in London had a star-studded and glamorous red carpet that preceded the event. Among the likes of Billie Eilish and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, was in attendance. She stole looks from photographers and spectators in a golden, metallic gown, but soon after photos were released, people online realized that the gown looked strikingly familiar.

It appears that the Duchess, in honor of the event, was paying homage to the late Princess Diana and mother of her husband, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. In 1985, Princess Diana wore a silver variation of this dress by Bruce Oldfield to the James Bond film premiere, A View To A Kill. Middleton’s dress was a Jenny Packham embellished gown, and unlike Diana’s, Middleton’s dress featured a cape that elegantly draped over the Duchess’ shoulders and hit the floor.

What was kept the same however were the shoulderpads in Middleton’s gown as well as the tastefully puckered mid-section of the gown. But as all fashion trends change, so do variations of the same dress. Lamé fabric in Diana’s 1985 gown was traded in for Middleton’s beaded and embellished ensemble. Both dresses exuded elegance and flare, carrying on a legacy of style that incorporates an element of emotion into fashion.

Middleton paired her look with a pair of pointed leather gold pumps, designed by a choice favorite of the Duchess, Aquazzura. For the jewelry, she utilized a statement earring, matching the gold in the rest of her outfit. The sizable, custom-made circles hanging from her ears were designed by British jeweler Onitaa.

Some elements of style are timeless, and a gown paying homage to your passed mother-in-law, commemorating an event that’s sentimental in nature, is an ultimate act of carrying on a legacy. Diana’s iconic style lives on, and rightly so.
