Kanye West leveraged his fashion brand connections to show his support for the family of his late friend, Earl Simmons, also known as DMX. Through his Yeezy brand, West commissioned fashion house Balenciaga to create a limited edition long-sleeve tribute shirt, which came in a well-worn black color with oversized fit and featured DMX’s image, name, and the acronym “R.I.P” on the front and the words “In Loving Memory” on the back.

One sleeve was printed with the iconic rapper’s birthdate — 12.18.1970 — and the other the day 50-year-old DMX passed away — 04.09.2021.

An image of the $200 shirt was shared with DMX’s 3.2 million followers on his Instagram account and sold out within 24 hours. According to a website created for the piece, net proceeds raised — estimated to be around $1 million — will benefit DMX’s loved ones. West, 43, reportedly also helped organize a memorial service held for the “Party Up” star at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on April 24.

DMX reportedly suffered a heart attack on April 2 following a drug overdose and he was placed on life support at a hospital in White Plains, New York, where he later died. He was laid to rest on April 25 following an emotional service at Brooklyn’s Cultural Christian Center.

“It makes me sad that my dad will never be able to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ ever to me again,” DMX’s daughter, Aaliyah, 9, said at the ceremony. “I was excited to come to New York and spend a week with him and meet some of my brothers and sisters. But God had other plans.”

She concluded: “I know my dad is in heaven. Even though he can’t talk back, I know I can still talk to him. I think it’s good that I get to call my dad a legend. Rest easy, Dad.”
