Joan Smalls is known for her show-stopping red carpet moments, and her latest appearance at the 2022 American Music Awards is no exception. The supermodel attended the awards show in a stunning gold LaQuan Smith gown that played with proportions — and similarly, so did her bold hair look.

Celebrity hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons gave Smalls’ long locks an edgy update with blunt face-framing layers that sat at her cheekbones, while the rest of her long lengths were styled sleek and straight. It’s a striking look that’s been gaining popularity this year, both on TikTok and now in Hollywood, as stars chop layers to add interest to an otherwise classic red carpet hairstyle.

To accompany Smalls’ shiny locks, makeup artist Patrick Ta chose a bronze smokey eye with peachy blush and a soft, neutral lip. Ta’s Instagram page revealed that he used his own Patrick Ta Beauty Major Skin Foundation in the Tan 1 on Smalls, alongside the Major Headlines Palette Volume ll to create the model’s flattering flush on the cheeks.

For the eyes, Ta opted for the Major Dimensions Eyeshadow Palette in varying shades of warm brown and gold shades, finished with lots of lashes and natural, groomed arches. The lips were lined with a neutral tone that complimented Smalls’ natural lip color, with a touch of gloss for added shine.

Smalls has been keeping very busy in recent weeks, having walked Rihanna’s infamous Savage X Fenty show. In an interview with E! News in the lead-up to the show’s premiere, Smalls reflected on her career in the industry and the importance of the “Lift Me Up” singer’s notoriously inclusive lingerie show.

“It’s been a part of my conversation since I started in this industry, where there has always been a lack of diversity,” she told the outlet. “To see it come this far and having her be the trailblazer, especially in this space of intimate-wear, it’s kind of revolutionary.”
