A log-cabin lodge in Old Snowmass, a barn for horses and curtains nobody is allowed to change. Hollywood is full of dream homes that last about as long as the relationships that built them. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s Colorado retreat is the exception. Four decades on, it is still standing, still lived in and, by Russell’s own account, still his favorite place in the world.
“Our Old Snowmass home is my favorite,” the actor told The Wall Street Journal in early 2026. “It’s a large, beautiful log-cabin lodge on a ranch that we moved into a little over 40 years ago.”
A Love Story That Started With Log Homes
Russell’s attachment to the area predates the couple. He told Men’s Health that he moved to Colorado when he was 26, even though his work kept pulling him back to Los Angeles. “My life’s been split, going back and forth,” he said.
Hawn and Russell became a couple in 1983, and the mountains quickly became their shared escape. “Goldie and I share a passion for log homes,” Russell told the Journal. “I never got that out of my system, starting with the one in Maine.”
According to Kate Hudson, Hawn first built a guesthouse on the land, then Russell built the main house, and the family lived there for two years starting in 1985. A Denver Post report cited by AOL describes about 70 acres across two adjoining properties near Aspen and Snowmass, with a main residence of around 6,500 square feet and a separate guesthouse of about 2,700 square feet.
Inside a House That Refuses to Change
Russell describes mountain views out the back, a barn for the horses and a big fireplace in the living room. What he enjoys most, he has said, is waking up to those mountains.
The decor has barely moved in decades, and that is entirely deliberate. Hudson has called the home “a bit of a time capsule,” noting that some of the curtains are around 30 years old and that her mother refuses to update them. In a world of constant renovations, it is almost radical.
The Ranch That Hosted a Princess
The property has also played a quiet role in royal history. Russell has said that Princess Diana stayed at the ranch for 10 days with Princes William and Harry, after he suggested it as a place to escape photographers. The family housekeeper, Bonnie, grew close to Diana and later received Christmas cards from her, according to Russell.
It is a detail that says a lot about the house itself. This was never a showpiece. It was a place to disappear.
Why They Keep Coming Back
The couple also spends time in Los Angeles, Palm Desert and New York, but Colorado keeps pulling them back. Russell’s son Wyatt now lives in the state with his wife, Meredith Hagner, and their two boys, so the ranch has become a multigenerational base.
“I’d like to be there more,” Russell, 75, told Fox News Digital in March. “And there’s a different kind of life there.” He added that what he enjoys most is that Hawn, 80, “really likes it in Colorado.”
The two famously never married, and more than 40 years later, people still wonder how they made it work. Their log home may be part of the answer: a place they built slowly, kept simple and never felt the need to reinvent.
