Their guests thought they were coming to a charity softball game. Instead, they watched two of country music’s biggest stars get married. Thirty years later, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are still together, and he says the secret is a habit that has nothing to do with fame.

In short

  • Tim McGraw and Faith Hill married on October 6, 1996, in a surprise wedding in Louisiana.
  • Thirty years later, McGraw says the key is regularly checking in with each other, especially when life changes.
  • With their three daughters grown, the couple say they have turned the empty nest into the honeymoon they never had.

The surprise wedding of 1996

The couple met in Nashville in 1994, according to iHeart. McGraw proposed backstage at Country Jam in Grand Junction, Colorado, in 1996, and they married months later, on October 6, in his home state of Louisiana. Their guests believed they were attending a charity softball game and concert.

The habit: checking in

In a recent magazine interview reported by Taste of Country, McGraw, now 59, explained that commitment is only the start. “Points of change, I think, are the most dangerous parts of a long marriage,” he said. His answer is to stop and talk regularly: “Hey, we need to check in and see where we’re at.”

He also sees the length of their marriage as a gift. “The beauty, I think, in a long marriage is you get the chance to fall in love with a new person every so often,” he said. “Because people change.”

Empty nest, second honeymoon

The couple have three daughters: Gracie, 29, Maggie, 28, and Audrey, 24. When their youngest left home, the adjustment was hard, especially for Hill. “That lasted about six months,” McGraw said. Then they decided to treat this new chapter as the honeymoon they never really had. “We’ve made it fun, by ourselves.”

A new stage is already on the horizon. Maggie got engaged in August. “So sooner or later they’ll all be married and there will be grandkids,” McGraw said. “So we’re stepping into a new phase of life.”

A career milestone, shared

On October 18, 2026, McGraw was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and honored his wife and daughters in his speech, telling his girls they had grown into women he is “more proud of than any award or No. 1 single.” Few country legacies are as closely followed as theirs, alongside Dolly Parton’s, now carried on by her family.

The limit

McGraw’s comments come from interviews reported by country music outlets, and Hill has not added her own account. Advice that works for one couple is not a formula for every marriage, and the couple’s private life remains largely private.

The bottom line

Thirty years, three daughters and a Hall of Fame career later, Tim McGraw’s advice is refreshingly simple: when life changes, stop and check in. Sometimes the most romantic thing a couple can do is just talk.
