There’s nothing better than immersing ourselves in a book that we enjoy and that captivates us, taking us to another reality.

But how do you choose the books to read to be (almost) certain that you will like them?

Seven out of every ten readers discover their books through the recommendations of others. In fact, according to a survey conducted by Bookabook, the first Italian crowdfunding publisher, 41% of readers choose which books to buy based on recommendations from other readers, while 33% rely on social media.

More than 15% of readers seek insights from newspaper and blog reviews, and they often place their trust in the guidance of their favored bookseller for inspiration.

Choosing the right books to read is not easy. Everyone can relate to the overwhelming feeling of being in a bookstore, surrounded by thousands of titles, and struggling to figure out which book is right for you.

You need to somehow sharpen your instincts, equipped with a sort of map, a compass that can provide guidance when you have various books in your hands to choose from.

To make the right choice of a book and avoid leaving it unfinished on your nightstand, we’re giving you seven tips on how to find the perfect book.

How to Choose Books to Read

7 Tricks for Choosing Books to Read

1. Science says having friends lengthens life. Having friends with the same literary tastes… lengthens your reading list. Most books are discovered through word of mouth, so the best way to discover new books is to talk about books! That’s why it’s essential to build a community of readers to find out about the best new books before they even reach the bookstore shelves.

2. The power of social media. Follow an Instagram or TikTok account that has recommended books you’ve enjoyed. Perhaps they share your tastes.

3. When you finish a book you liked, Google the author’s name with the aim of finding out if they’ve written other stories waiting to be read by you.

4. Take a look at other books of the same genre published by the same publisher as a book you liked. The chances that the same person chose them are generally quite high. So, why not trust it?

5. Ask your trusted bookseller, “If I liked this book, what do you recommend I read now?” As much as you may love books, there’s always a bookseller out there who knows more than you (and more than the algorithms).

6. Read reviews from specialized publications. Firstly, because very often, they are excellent readings themselves, and secondly, you might discover new fascinating stories to read.

7. Surprise yourself! Occasionally, choose a book that is not in line with your usual tastes. Maybe carry a book you’re sure you’ll like in your bag or backpack, like a parachute. But there’s no age at which a good book can’t surprise us. And habits are made to be changed…
