The cast of Girls

From the show that gave us some of the greatest lines of dialogue ever written, including “let’s make fun of the girl who took a risk and put herself out there creatively,” and “I have work, then a dinner thing, and then I am busy trying to become who I am,” comes some very exciting news: Girls is officially returning for a five-episode revival.

The HBO dramedy, which followed four friends navigating the chaos of being twenty-something women in New York City, will return in 2027, a decade after its finale aired. Creator Lena Dunham will reunite with original cast members Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells, with executive producer Judd Apatow also returning.

Why Girls Still Matters

Girls was the cultural television moment of the 2010s as a defining portrait of millennial women. Its central characters were selfish, chaotic and unlikeable. It was an unforgiving and unflinching insight into the perils of early adulthood in the peak of the millennial optimism era. And it was still funny, tender and deeply comforting.

A decade later, its exploration of precarious careers, difficult friendships and the pressure to have everything figured out still resonates. Now, we’re ready to see what happens when these women approach 40. Here’s what we know so far.

Where We Left the Girls

At the end of the original series, Hannah was a new mother to baby Grover, preparing to become a college professor. Marnie was living upstate with Hannah and helping raise her son, while Shoshanna was engaged and distancing herself from the group. Jessa, meanwhile, was back together with Adam after abandoning her therapist training.

What Can We Expect From Their Next Chapter?

In a 2025 interview with Variety, creator Dunham shared her thoughts on where each of the Girls would be. Describing Hannah, she says, “She teaches at Bard and loves raising her son. She probably has a girlfriend who’s, like, a chef. And she’s less obsessed with being famous.”
She predicted Marnie would be on her third marriage, still singing. Williams’ predictions for her character were pretty similar, telling Vanity Fair, “I think Marnie’s still trying to have a singing career, in addition to other jobs. I picture her with another marriage under her belt; I think probably on the verge of deciding to have a baby on her own.”

Dunham suggested Shoshanna would be married, then divorced from the mayor of New York City, running a zero-waste athleisure startup. Mamet had predictions of her own, telling The Sam Sanders Show that her character would be thriving, either on a second marriage or second divorce and about to have a lesbian tryst.

Dunham also told Variety that she predicted Jessa would be unvaccinated, living on a boat in Croatia.
Whether these predictions make it into the revival remains to be seen, but what we do know is that Dunham and team will come to the project with plenty of wit and wisdom. As Dunham said on her Substack, “It’s rare in life that you get the chance to return to something you love with new knowledge and a shit ton of gratitude.”
