It’s often said that, like mathematical equations, the best outfits come down to a simple formula. Hailey Bieber is someone who knows this well, often relying on several measured ensembles like her tried-and-tested mini skirt and longline trench silhouette or cropped baby shirt and baggy jeans combination.
For her latest look, however, the new mum eschewed these tropes altogether by looking to an entirely different concoction that combines tropical resort wear, festive season dressing and a nod to fashion’s favourite fictional columnist, Carrie Bradshaw.
Over the weekend, the 28-year-old escaped to Costa Rica for a weekend getaway with her husband, Justin Bieber, and best friend Kendall Jenner for a mutual acquaintance’s nuptials. (It’s presumed the couple’s baby, Jack Blues, was also present for the holiday.) While wedding guest dress codes have certainly relaxed in recent years, Bieber reminded us that embracing a floral motif is always a safe bet through her candy apple rosette.
Throughout the airing of Sex And The City, legendary stylist and costume designer Patricia Fields ensured that the fabric flower decal would remain a hallmark of the era by dressing Sarah Jessica Parker in every incarnation of the trend imaginable.
Now, Bieber has become somewhat of the modern ambassador for the look having worn a tan Saint Laurent rosette to the 2022 Vanity Fair Oscars After Party and cream Magda Butrum version for Easter celebrations in 2023.
However, for this occasion, the inclusion of the rosette is far more intelligent than it seems. Bieber’s look actually recontextualizes the traditional boutonniere—the small bouquet pinned to the lapel pocket of suit jackets for formal events—worn by grooms.
Since welcoming her son, Bieber has become well acquainted with tailoring conventions, as seen by the dramatically oversized suit she wore for her first postpartum outing.
She completed the look by styling her caramel brunette tresses into loose waves, a flush of colour across her cheeks and a baby pink manicure. (Which Selena Gomez just proved is the ultimate shade for an engagement manicure.)
