Goodbye Chunky Dad Sneakers, Here Are the 5 Fall 2026 Shoe Trends Quietly Replacing Your Classics

Dressier loafers, embellished flats, mid heels, brown boots and slimmer sneakers: the quiet shoe update of the season. Every season promises a shoe revolution. This fall, the change is more subtle. Instead of replacing your wardrobe, the new trends rework the classics you already own, and that makes them easier to adopt.

The Fédération Française de la Chaussure, the French footwear federation, has identified seven major trends for fall-winter 2026-27 and describes a season that favors versatile shoes able to move between different styles. Retailers and forecasters interviewed by FashionUnited point in the same direction: dressier shapes, earthy colors and slimmer silhouettes.

1. The Reworked Loafer

The loafer is still the shoe of the season, but it is changing. Dutch buyer Yahya Öztürk told FashionUnited that he sees a shift toward dressier shapes, with loafers gaining ground on sneaker-like soles. Elle Belgium highlights gathered leather loafers, ballet-loafer hybrids and brown suede styles, a trend popularized by Miu Miu.

Wear a chunkier or slightly heeled loafer with straight jeans or a midi skirt. If you have wide feet, soft suede and a rounded toe are more forgiving than stiff leather.

2. Embellished Flats and Mary Janes

Ballet flats are getting dressed up. Zeitgeist analyst Christine Boland describes classics being reworked through decoration, with ribbons, charms and add-ons, while forecaster Jan Agelink notes rhinestones and ornaments appearing even on sneakers. Mary Janes with fine straps and slightly pointier toes are the polished version.

The strap on a Mary Jane offers more support than a classic flat, which makes it a good option for narrow feet or long days on the move.

3. The Kitten Heel

For those who want height without discomfort, the kitten heel is the daytime compromise between a flat and a pump. It adds polish to jeans and works with tailored trousers at the office. Slingback versions are the lightest and most elegant.

4. Tall Boots in Brown Leather

Boots are back in force. Öztürk said the return of the boot stands out in his women’s collection, with brown and earth tones the strongest colors. On the fall 2026 runways, Who What Wear spotted thigh-high boots at Chloé, Hermès, Khaite and Ralph Lauren. Chocolate leather is the easiest way in: it is softer than black and works with denim, knits and skirts.

If thigh-highs feel like too much, a knee-high boot with a slim shaft gives a similar effect under a midi skirt.

5. The Slim Sneaker

The chunky dad sneaker is losing ground. Agelink describes a move toward slimmer sneaker silhouettes, some decorated with ruffles, lace or rhinestones, which he calls “a mix of sport and ornament.” Bold colors and animal prints make them feel fresh, and they pair easily with straight jeans and skirts.

How to Choose

Start with your lifestyle. If you walk a lot, prioritize the slim sneaker and the loafer. If you dress up for work, the kitten heel and Mary Janes will get the most wear. Brown boots cover almost everything else.

Goodbye chunky dad sneakers. This fall, the smartest shoe update is not a revolution, just a sharper version of the classics.
