Fresh off those reports she could be engaged soon, supermodel Gigi Hadid wore an ivory off-the-shoulder gown, complete with a bouquet, to the 2024 Met Gala in New York City on May 6.
The dramatic Thom Browne number—with tiered ruffles, exaggerated hips and a detachable skirt—was springtime personified as micro beads in the shape of yellow roses and forest green foliage were handsewn to its corseted bodice and overlay. Upon closer inspection, you will notice Hadid is also wearing (another wedding symbol) a white silk moiré coat below her waist, the deconstructed look a famous design cue of Browne’s.
“It’s always a privilege to watch Gigi come to life. She is a true talent that shines at whatever she does,” Browne said adding the custom piece took over 13,500 hours to make. “I wanted her look to embody the fragility and immense work that you see in Andrew [Bolton]’s exhibit, blooming on the carpet and into the Metropolitan Museum of Art,” Browne says of Hadid.
“It was that slow to walk [up the stairs] with because I’m literally wearing a sculpture by Thom Browne and his team,” Hadid said on the carpet. “There’s 2,800,000 beads just on the dress alone. Seventy people worked on it so I’m just so honoured to be here presenting this to them.”
This year’s Met Gala is themed Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion with a “Garden Of Time” dress code. According to Max Hollein, The Met’s Marina Kellen French Director and CEO, it will “push the boundaries of our imagination and invite us to experience the multi-sensory facets of a garment.”
“Sleeping Beauties will heighten our engagement with these masterpieces of fashion by evoking how they feel, move, sound, smell, and interact when being worn, ultimately offering a deeper appreciation of the integrity, beauty, and artistic brilliance of the works on display,” he added.
