2022 trends

Trends work in cycles meaning they come and go (see: Y2K revival), and although a lot of 2020’s fashionable trends will be carried over to 2022—Looking at our 2022 trend predictions, bold colors, catsuits, and fringe continue to reign supreme. Still, there are a few we’re ready to bid farewell to… that is, until the next generation revives them.

This year the trend cycle definitely was on overdrive. What’s in and out changed faster than we could say “trends.” Skinny jeans were out, then made a comeback but only ironically? Still trying to grasp this one— we’ll thank TikTok for that. We may be saying goodbye to these trends but it doesn’t mean they’re Démodé, but their hype is certainly dying down for 2022. Here, GRAZIA shares all the trends we’re (hopefully) leaving in 2021 so you can make room in your wardrobe for all the 2022 trends to come.

The Ugly Shoe Trend

In the past couple of years’ footwear and accessories lost their importance as we found ourselves mainly in the comforts of our homes dressing our feet with crocs. The only times we were dressed up it was waist up for zoom meetings. Now that we safely reemerge into the world again in 2022, it’s time to bring out statement-making shoes to match the bold looks trending in the new year.

The Puff Sleeve

In recent years, designers like Simone Rocha and Cecilie Bahnsen popularized the puff sleeve trend. And although it will always hold a special place in my heart, I think it’s time to see farewell. But not entirely, the puff sleeve still has a place for special occasions; however, wearing the style in everyday wear has seen its time.

Skinny jeans being out

Unpopular or popular opinion (it’s hard to tell these days) skinny jeans are here to stay. At the beginning of 2021, Gen Z’ers wrote of the nostalgic millennial jean style, and then some point around fall reinstated it. It’s unclear where the trend stands now, but for 2022 we hope to see it make a big comeback. Skinny jeans are sexy, fun, and playful, which is what 2022 dressing is all about.

Biker Shorts

Let’s move these back to the workout wardrobe permanently.

Micro bags

We’ve never understood the point of micro-bags other than being adorable, which some time is all you need to make a purchase. To be specific, we’re saying goodbye to top handle micro bags, not only are they impractical they’re inconvenient and take up hand space to hold nothing. Hold on to your micro crossbody bags and neck bags err.. lanyards? We’re still loving these and although you can’t hold much at least they aren’t taking up hand space while also being oh-so adorable.

Chunky sneakers

Dad sneakers may finally be on their way out—we’ll see. The latest and upcoming sneaker releases seem to make a return to a sleek frame. When tenniscore still going strong, opt for a pair of tennis shoes. If you’re still looking to sport a chunky silhouette, lug boots are very much in and a good substitute that’ll keep you on-trend.

Year-round Tie-Dye

For 2022 color and cool patterns are making a moment. However, tie-dye is a trend that we’ll be leaving in 2021, at least during fall and winter. I confess I lived in my tie-dye hoodies earlier this year, but as we reemerge, tie-dye during the fall and winter seems off-seasons. Instead, we’re looking to bold geometric and retro-inspired patterns that punch a big statement. See you summer!
