Emily in Paris

Season two of Emily in Paris aired today. Of course, we’ve already caught on to some iconic style moments that are oh-so quintessential Emily Cooper (played by Lily Collins). But there’s a certain je ne sais quoi about Emily’s style as she navigates her life in fashion. “Last season we used a lot of black and white, so I didn’t want to do that anymore.” says lead costume designer Patricia Fields in an interview with Netflix. “We didn’t want to do the bucket hat again, obviously, because we don’t want to bore our audience.”

If you’re expecting Emily in Paris to wear head-to-toe neutral tones, bodycon cutout dresses, and other trendy looks, you can forget it. “We try to avoid fashion trends in the show. I say over and over again that trends die young; trends get very tired very quickly.” Fields confirm. Instead, you can catch Emily in vibrant gloves, a bygone trend that Fields loves dearly, both professionally and in her personal life. However, you can see Emily in 2022 trends like bold colors and funky patterns, which appropriately play into her unique style. “I recently coined an expression for myself that describes what reaction I like to see with costuming, and it’s “happy clothes.” I love color.” Fields adds.

Although not clear if in Emily’s fictional world the coronavirus pandemic is in the past or future, her dressing certainly appeals to post-pandemic dressing. Fun, eclectic, and bold or “happy clothes,” as Fields explained, that are purposely made to make us feel lifted during these times.
