This year, the MTV Video Music Awards will take place on Planet Her as singer-rapper Doja Cat will host the ceremony. The show is set to take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on September 12. Doja is also up for five awards including Artist Of The Year and Video Of The Year for her song “Kiss Me More,” featuring SZA, and will be performing during the event.

A first time awards show host, Doja has been known to bring her personality to these types of events. I mean who could forget the black mullet and olive-green ostrich feather dress?

Doja posted the announcement on Instagram to her 13.8 million followers. The advertisement was full of neon pinks and yellow and had the artist floating in space, which may or may not give an inkling towards the aesthetic of her show. It would make sense for her to have a space-age theme in tribute to her hit album, Planet Her, released in June of this year.

“I’m hosting the 2021 #VMAs this year Wowowowowowow,” Doja wrote on the Instagram post. “Tune in on 9/12 at 8pm on @mtv.”

Other confirmed acts for this year’s VMAs include Shawn Mendes, Doja Cat, Chlöe Twenty One Pilots, Olivia Rodrigo, Lorde, Machine Gun Kelly, Lil Nas X, Foo Fighters and Camila Cabello. The diverse and interesting combination of performers will be something special, as Lorde will most likely perform songs from her newest release Solar Power, and Lil Nas X always puts on a good show.

Justin Bieber and Megan Thee Stallion lead with the most award nominations, with Megan up for Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Hip-Hop and Artist of the Year. Will she sweep? We’ll have to wait and see, as this year the competition is hot, and there’s no lack of talent.
