Most people can barely remember what they had for dinner on Tuesday. David Beckham can tell you what his wife has eaten for a quarter of a century. The answer, which he shared on a food podcast, is so simple that it surprised even fans used to the Beckhams’ famous discipline. And according to David, there has been exactly one exception.
What David Beckham revealed
In February 2022, David Beckham was a guest on River Cafe Table 4, the podcast hosted by restaurateur Ruth Rogers. Asked about food at home, he did not hesitate. “Unfortunately, I’m married to someone who has eaten the same thing for the last 25 years,” he said, as reported by Hola! USA.
The meal? “Since I’ve met Victoria, she only eats grilled fish, steamed vegetables. She’ll very rarely deviate away from there.” The one time he remembers her eating something from his plate was during her pregnancy with their daughter Harper. “It was one of my favorite evenings,” he joked. “I can’t remember what it was but I know she’s not eaten it since!”
Victoria’s response
Victoria Beckham, now 52, did not let the comment go unanswered. In an interview with Vogue Australia, reported by Insider, she laughed: “Talk about making me sound boring!” Then she explained: “What he meant is that he’s never met anyone who’s more disciplined with the way that they eat.”
She also nuanced the picture. Her diet, she said, includes “lots of healthy fat: fish, avocado, nuts, that sort of thing.” And she admitted that her approach reflects her personality more than any rule: “I’m quite extreme in anything I do, whether it’s eating or working out or drinking or not drinking.” Her comfort food, according to an earlier appearance on the same podcast, is about as modest as it gets: plain wholegrain toast with salt.
What nutrition guidelines say about her plate
Grilled fish and steamed vegetables are hardly a controversial choice. The American Heart Association recommends eating two servings of fish a week, ideally fatty fish such as salmon or sardines, with a serving defined as about 3 ounces cooked. Steaming, for its part, adds no fat at all.
Where most dietitians would gently push back is on the repetition itself. Variety is generally recommended to cover the full range of nutrients, and eating the same thing for decades is not a model to copy as is. What many people do take from Victoria’s approach is the principle behind it: fewer decisions, simple cooking, and a handful of meals you know work for you.
Discipline, the Beckham way
The same sense of order runs through the rest of Victoria’s life, from her famously methodical approach to her closet to the clean, pared-back aesthetic that the next generation of the family seems to share, as seen inside Nicola Peltz and Brooklyn Beckham’s minimalist home.
One plate, 25 years
Victoria Beckham’s diet may sound austere, but it says something many of us recognize: the habits that last are often the simplest ones. Whether you would ever order grilled fish and steamed vegetables for the 9,000th time is another question. David, for his part, still seems to be waiting for the next exception.
