The MTV Video Music Awards – read: the sassier, come-as-you-may little sister to the Grammys – has arrived. A carpet where raunchy lace-up dresses circa Christina Aguilera in the early 2000s is commonplace (Hello Madison Beer), and fluffy hats reminiscent of Pamela Anderson at the 1999 VMAs are OK to wear even if you’re not Lisa Vanderpump on any given weekday (Kacey Musgraves, we’re looking at you).

But interestingly, miniature-sized Cuban singer Camila Cabello – the same woman who served that steamy performance of Senorita with boyfriend Shawn Mendes at the 2019 American Music Awards – has taken an elegant approach to today’s event. Dressed in a bubblegum pink and scarlet red Alexis Mabille Couture gown, Cabello looked like a gift to the world with its obnoxious bow at its centre. Her hair was slick, parted down the middle, and the perfect frame for the smattering of pink and red dots that fanned from her eyes.

Cabello, 24, made her movie debut in Amazon Prime’s modern musical version of Cinderella this week. While the film boasts a stellar cast, including Billy Porter as a genderless Fairy Godmother, the update on the classic completely missed the mark with critics the world over branding it (and its one million sexual innuendos) “cringeworthy”. (In one scene, the princess mocks the prince saying, “He’s not working with much upstairs and I’d be surprised if it was different elsewhere.” Pitch Perfect’s writer Kay Cannon can be held accountable for this one, as can James Corden who serves as a producer.)

At least, in real life, we know Cabello will be going home with her prince and real life boyfriend Shawn Mendes. Cabello is nominated for the Song Of Summer gong and Mendes is nominated for Best Pop Video.

More to come.
