If you haven’t taken a photo of Brooke Shields to your brow waxer and said “I want this,” have you ever really lived? For over 40 years, Shields has been the Holy Grail of Eyebrow Goals. Even when people were tweezing and waxing to give achieve the same pencil-thin eyebrows as Jessica Rabbit, Shields had the eyebrow real estate. Those born with an abundance of eyebrow hairs uphold Shields as a goddess (which she is, of course.) But now that big, bushy brows are back and show no signs of disappearing, the master opened up about what she does to keep her brows tamed and in place, and not quite so woolly mammoth-esque.

In an interview with InStyle, Shields revealed she avoids brow gels, pomades, and liners for her brows. “I have yet to find a good gel that doesn’t get crunchy,” she shared to the outlet, admitting that she has a handy-dandy hack to work around it, using things we all have at easy access. “I’ll put my lip gloss or conditioner balms on them. It cleans them up a bit and adds a sheen.”

It should be noted that a lot of brow products can often have alcohols and other ingredients that often can dry out the skin and the hair, leaving them patchy… thus requiring you to use more brow products. It’s a vicious circle to break, and that’s why a minimalist approach like Shields’ is the best way to go. Using a salve, a balm, or a vegetable-based soap are all great (and inexpensive) ways to fluff up and set your brow without overworking them and running the risk of patchiness.
