Congratulations on your regained and deserved emancipation. I love you, your fierce fans love you and the world NEEDS your brilliance. Happy Britneypendence day! #FreeBritney”
There’s a lot to be said of Britney Spears recently, but above all, it’s good to finally say her conservatorship is over. After 14 years of economic, artistic, personal suppression and censorship, Britney is finally free to thrive and live a life on her own terms. Now that she is free, we could potentially see some great moments from Britney in a sort of Renaissance era, but we’re most looking forward to in the near future is the star’s wedding to fiancé Sam Asghari.
While we don’t have a date set, what we do know is that, per Britney’s Instagram page, “Donatella Versace is making my dress as we speak.” So what we can look forward to is a Versace wedding, and it’s going to be a moment worth noting. But this is far from the first time the two have worked together.
Since the beginning of Britney’s career, Donatella Versace has been her right-hand woman in terms of dressing her for events such as red carpets and music videos. One of the most notable moments of Britney in Versace comes from Versace’s Spring/Summer women’s 2003 collection, where she showed up in a iridescent, multicolored sheer gown. Donatella posted a photo of the two from the event back in May, showing solidarity with the singer to solidify their long-standing creative relationship.
“I love that @britneyspears posted her favourite 2000s looks!!” Versace wrote beneath a photo of the two. “This flashback is from when she came to my show in 2002, looking glamorous in Versace✨ I’ll never forget when you came and stayed with me Britney, you were and will always be magical!!!!
Some of Britney’s most notable moments in Versace were on the scenes of award shows in the early aughts. Flashback to September 7, 2008, the MTV Video Music Awards are in full swing and Britney Spears was one of the hottest topics in pop culture. She walked away from that awards ceremony with three awards, snagging Best Video, Best Pop Video and Best Female Video for “Piece of Me.”
But while she was the talk of the town for the music and the awards, her fashion was truly a moment to remember. Britney featured two Versace outfits in a single night, the first of the two was a multi-dimensional, multi-colored mini dress featuring thin straps and a fringed hemline.
As for the second dress, the singer once again wore a little shiny dress, but this one had a little less edge and featured more of a classy aesthetic.
While the first dress had more of a blue tinge, this one was straight silver with an over-the-shoulder strap. As she accepted her one of three “Moon Men” that night, Britney stole the show with both her talent and her style.
So while we wait for the debut of Britney’s wedding dress, we should remember that this relationship was built through Britney’s glory and through her toughest moments, and Versace has built a relationship with her that has stood up to the test of time.
In fact, we would argue that through the early 2000’s and into the 2010’s, this Britney x Versace collaboration is one of the most recognizable aesthetic icons of the last 20 years. It formed a lot of sillouhettes and styles we’re seeing recreated today, and let’s not forget to give them their flowers.
