What is a leader without her greatest soldiers? In a new video from yesterday, Britney Spears took the time to personally thank her biggest supporters, the ones who have been out on the front lines of her conservatorship battle since the beginning, thee #FreeBritney movement. Spears posted to Twitter and Instagram to share a message thanking them for “freeing her” of her conservatorship.

“#FreeBritney movement … I have no words … because of you guys and your constant resilience in freeing me from my conservatorship … my life is now in that direction !!!!!” She captioned a video of herself with Kanye West’s “Fade” playing in the background. “I cried last night for two hours cause my fans are the best and I know it … I feel your hearts and you feel mine … that much I know is true !!!!!”

And it’s great to see Spears give the ones most loyal to her credit, but how did the #FreeBritney movement start? Why did it start? We’ll break that down for you.

It all can be traced back to a podcast known as “Britney’s Gram” and an online blog by Anthony Elia, which has since been removed by Spears’ legal team. These discussions of Spears’ conservatorship sparked the movement, as well as the subsequent #FreeBritney hashtag that dominated Twitter.

In response to the rise in #FreeBritney  support, Jamie Spears’ legal team released a statement saying ” “It’s time for the conspiracy theories about Britney Spears’ well-being and the mob #FreeBritney movement to stop… Over the past few months, Britney and her father Jamie have sat by while fans have accused them of numerous false and malicious things, including attempts to mislead the public with the content that appears on her social media.”

But now that Spears’ conservatorship is now officially suspended, people who raised awareness about this struggle to the public should be thanked properly, and Spears gave them their spotlight.
