Robin Thede’s A Black Lady Sketch Show will be delivering us more deep-belly laughs, following its renewal by HBO for its forthcoming third season on Monday, May 24. After its debut in 2019, the narrative comedy show rose to the occasion as a smash hit that ditched the traditional sketch television blueprint. Boasting a bevy of historic firsts (an all-Black women writer’s room, a Black woman sketch director and a cast composed entirely of Black women), the series received three Primetime Emmy nominations for outstanding variety sketch series, directing for a variety series and guest actress in a comedy series (Angela Bassett) for its premiere season.

“Making A Black Lady Sketch Show is a dream come true and I’m honored to continue our incredible series and wonderful partnership with HBO, Issa Rae, JAX Media and our entire producing team,” Thede said in a statement via Deadline. Thede, who balances the show as the creator, showrunner, executive producer, writer and star, continued, “I can’t wait to push the show even further in Season 3 and to keep delivering the laugh outloud content our audiences love to see! I see this show as a budding comedy institution, where Black women can play fully realized, nonstereotypical characters and I am so grateful for the opportunity to continue to create that space for today’s premiere comedians.”

Despite the odds of the pandemic, Season 2 has yet again hilariously elevated the comedy landscape with dynamic characters who tackle culturally relevant scenarios. Welcoming newcomers Laci Mosley and Skye Townsend onto the cast and featuring the occasional celebrity cameos (*insert Omarion into magical game of M.A.S.H*), the show’s sophomore season casually raises the bar even higher for what’s to come next. “Robin continues to break new ground in the world of sketch comedy,” said Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President, HBO Comedy Programming. “She delivered a hilariously sharp second season, and we’re looking forward to seeing where Robin, Issa Rae, and the A Black Lady Sketch Show team take us in Season 3.”
