The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games have finally started this week, and with that comes the highly-anticipated figure skating competitions — and the statement-making costumes each athlete sports. Unlike many other Olympic games, the figure skating competitions are also a critique of style that just might land competitors onto the podium. So, in addition to some significant moves on the ice (all eyes are on the quadruple jumps!) and entertaining commentary from the sidelines, we also have striking looks to look forward to.

The Olympic ice serves as a stage where the world’s top figure skaters bring together athletic skill, empowering music, and eye-catching costumes to create a narrative. What a skater wears and how they present themselves further conveys their message and story. Meaning, a good costume that ties into the theme can really make a performance, while a not-so-adequate look can negatively impact their routine.

If you’re an avid follower of competitive skating, you may have seen some of these dazzling costumes before the athletes hit the ice in Beijing. Since the Olympics isn’t the place to take chances, and figure skaters usually wear the same performance outfit repetitively to avoid any outfit malfunction, many already tested out their looks during the Grand Prix circuit, where it was not only a test of skill but also an outfit check.

From six-time U.S. Champion Nathan Chen’s minimal and sleek costumes to the colorful sequined style by the dominating Russian squad, ahead, these are some of the most dazzling figure skating looks seen on the ice during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games.
