Men wearing skirts is by no means a new concept. Case in point: Jean Paul Gaultier first paraded men on the runway back in 1985, and even way before that, the male skirt can be dated back to 14th-15th Century Europe when it was more of a cultural representation rather than a fashion move. Regardless, there’s no denying the male skirt is having quite the moment right now — I guess we can thank Brad Pitt for that after he recently wore a breezy brown skirt at the premiere of his latest film, Bullet Train. Now, A$AP Rocky is the latest gent to push his style boundaries, spotted in NYC in a black leather skirt.
The 33-year-old rapper stepped out for a shopping day in a head-to-toe Givenchy look, proving that he’s the ultimate cool dad. Although skirts are cited for their ease and breeze to keep you cool during summer’s peak, the new father went with a more risqué choice compared to Pitt’s linen number.
Rocky wore a knee-length leather skirt, which he paired with a cropped dark gray hoodie layered over a graphic tee. For footwear, he wore black leather clogs that complimented the skirt oh-so-perfectly. This isn’t the first time Rocky has pulled out a skirt from his wardrobe for his off-duty style or onstage attire, and it certainly won’t be the last. Just last month for the opening day of Wireless Festival 2022, Rocky took the stage in a black skirt that he wore with a tee featuring himself and an oversized jacket.
As gender norms continue to become nonexistent, especially with brands like Thom Browne, ALTU and Joseph Altuzarra’s genderless label, there’s no doubt that there will be many more men rocking the skirt — or other apparel.
Other style icons like Dune actor Oscar Isaac also broke the internet when he shared a daring pic in a timeless Thom Browne moment baring his legs. It may be necessary to cop a skirt or two, but one thing is for sure: it’ll significantly cool you down during the heatwave.
