New Yorkers are notorious for being tough, especially when it comes to adapting to things they’re not used to. Nothing shakes us, usually. But it seems, over the past few years, we’ve become soft when it comes to the wintry weather. Sure, we’ve had to suffer through the occasional polar vortex day here and there – and maybe a sporadic dusting of snow – but generally speaking, we’ve become accustomed to milder and drier winters.

But if 2020 taught us anything, it’s to expect the unexpected, and this winter has certainly come as a shock. Major snowstorms have become commonplace and although we are lucky enough to avoid that frigid and sludgy commute to work at the moment, we are still spending more time outside dining in the freezing cold temps.

When Tommy Hilfiger shipped truckloads of artificial snow into Park Armory for his après-ski-themed Fall 2014 show, it seemed he was building the winter scape we are experiencing now. Karl Lagerfeld’s 2019 reimagining of an Alpine ski town complete with piles of snow and smoking chimneys, chunky knits, and shearling boots felt similar. While we selected a piece or two to add to our wardrobes back then, today we really could do with Chanel’s whole Fall 2019 collection. Because today, aprés-ski attire is normcore.
