Last week, GRAZIA USA reported on TikTok’s latest viral aesthetic, “coastal grandmother“, and now it looks like celebrities are catching on to the trend — or for Anne Hathaway, her favorite way to dress finally caught up to the masses.
The Devil Wears Prada actress shared a photo on Instagram over the weekend wearing a look that perfectly fits the “coastal grandmother” style. She captioned the post, “I have been ready for #coastalgrandmother chic since before TikTok was born. May this moment never end.”
The 39-year-old proved age isn’t a factor in living out the “coastal grandmother” fantasy, wearing a white button-down shirt tucked into a pair of cream-colored chinos, topped off with a straw bucket hat and a pair of oversize sunglasses. Fans instantly connected the outfit to the OG “coastal grandmother,” filmmaker Nancy Meyers.
One fan commented, “This is an aesthetic! Giving me major Nancy Meyers vibes!!!” Meyers herself gave Hathaway’s cozy look the stamp of approval, commenting “Annie!” followed by a heart emoji. (The duo previously worked together on the film, The Intern.)
TikToker Lex Nicoleta, who takes credit for coining the term, describes “coastal grandmother” as the aesthetic for people who “love Nancy Meyer movies, coastal vibes, recipes and cooking, Ina Garten, and cozy interiors.” Think Diane Keaton as her on-screen character Erica Barry in the 2003 film Something’s Gotta Give.
Speaking of… Meyers expressed her surprise that the term is trending as high as it is in an Instagram post, and prompted Keaton to weigh in.
Keaton took to Instagram to share her reaction by posting a video of Erica Barry Googling, “What is Coastal Grandmother?” spliced with Nicoleta’s TikTok explainer, articles, and clips from Something’s Gotta Give. She captioned the post “From one coastal grandmother to another, Thank you!!!” tagging both Nicoleta and Meyers.
