Angelina Jolie has rarely shied away from discussing the complicated relationship she shares with her father, Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight. But during an emotional appearance at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the Hollywood star revealed a particularly painful memory from her family’s past.

While accepting the Maltin Modern Master Award, Jolie reflected on her mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, and the sacrifices she made while raising her children.

One story, involving the 1979 Academy Awards, offered a heartbreaking glimpse into the family’s history.

“My mother saw my father with another woman as he won the Oscar, and she was with her babies in an apartment,” Jolie recalled.

The memory has stayed with the actress for decades, shaping her understanding of family, motherhood, and the personal sacrifices that often remain invisible behind Hollywood’s glamour.

In 1979, Jon Voight received the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Coming Home, a drama about the emotional consequences of the Vietnam War.

It was a defining moment in his career, but for his estranged wife, Marcheline Bertrand, the evening carried a very different meaning.

Voight and Bertrand had married in 1971 and separated in 1976, when Angelina was still very young. Their divorce was finalized in 1980.

At the Oscars, Voight appeared alongside actress Stacey Pickren, while Bertrand watched the ceremony from home with her two children, James Haven and Angelina.

For Jolie, the contrast between her father’s public success and her mother’s private circumstances became a powerful symbol of their family history.

Before becoming a mother, Marcheline Bertrand had ambitions of building a successful acting career.

However, after welcoming her children, she gradually stepped away from Hollywood to focus on raising them.

Jolie has frequently spoken about her mother’s generosity, creativity, and the encouragement she provided throughout her childhood.

Although Bertrand never achieved the same level of fame as her former husband, she played an essential role in nurturing her daughter’s artistic ambitions.

Her influence extended beyond acting. Jolie has also credited her mother with inspiring her humanitarian interests and her commitment to helping vulnerable communities.

Bertrand died in 2007 at the age of 56 after battling cancer, a loss that profoundly affected the actress.

Angelina Jolie Dedicated Her Own Oscar to Her Mother

More than two decades after her father’s Academy Award victory, Jolie experienced her own unforgettable moment at the Oscars.

In 2000, she won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Girl, Interrupted, establishing herself as one of Hollywood’s most promising young talents.

But rather than viewing the award solely as a personal achievement, Jolie wanted to share the recognition with the woman who had supported her from the beginning.

“To have that moment of being able to go on stage, call her over, and say, ‘It’s yours.’ And then give her the Oscar. It was one of the greatest moments of my life,” she recalled.

For Jolie, the gesture represented more than gratitude. It was an opportunity to honor the dreams her mother had set aside.

Today, as a mother of six herself, Jolie continues to speak about the importance of family and the lasting influence of Marcheline Bertrand.

And while her relationship with Jon Voight has experienced years of public tension, her admiration for her mother remains one of the most consistent themes throughout her life and career.
