It’s oxymoronic to suggest that Amal Clooney—barrister and human rights advocate—has embraced the codes of a style rooted in criminal conduct. Yet here we are, discussing the 46-year-old’s latest off-duty street style foray for what it is: a judicial version of TikTok’s trending ‘mob wife aesthetic’.

After relegating ‘clean girls’ to a distant memory, #fashiontok acolytes swiftly adopted the styles worn by Mafiosi spouses. Fur coats, leather accents, big bags and bigger hair became the template du jour. Just like Natalie Portman translated ‘Office Siren’ style from the screen to Paris Fashion Week, Clooney has offered her own interpretation of Carmela Soprano’s uniform.

Taking to the streets of London, the mother-of-two donned a double-breasted two-toned cream coat made from shearling and fur. The thigh-grazing piece was reminiscent of a modern take on the 70s-inspired Afghan coat, with the remainder of her ensemble bringing in vintage elements in the form of a 60s ivory shift dress and thigh-high black stiletto alligator boots. On her arm, Clooney toted Louis Vuitton’s newly unveiled silhouette, the quilted GO-14 in a brandished tan.

As aficionados of the ‘mob wife aesthetic’ can attest to, the secret to achieving the look isn’t just dependent on your silhouette, but rather the mentality. This is where Clooney’s primed version deviates from the mould. In withholding from unleashing her most unapologetic version of herself, Clooney preserved the courtly demeanour her public-facing style has become revered for.

To truly be a ‘mob wife’, you must be dressed like you’re prepared to go to battle for your husband’s misdemeanours. Fittingly, Clooney has taken a page out of Dr. Melfi’s book and dressed like the woman eager to help the ‘don’ out of a life of crime. To us, that’s the most gangster manoeuvre of them all.
