For those born in the 90s, there are many trends from our childhood that we’d prefer never to visit again—jelly bracelets, bellbottom sleeves, flatforms… Until yesterday, I’d placed ‘dresses worn over pants’ in that category, then Alexa Chung came along and blew up that idea entirely.

Overnight, the designer and style savant shared a photo to her 4.1 million Instagram followers wearing head-to-toe Gucci, as part of Alessandro Michele’s digital event, GucciFest. The pieces—taken from the brand’s autumn/winter 2021 collection—included a velvet embellished mini dress, worn over frayed-edge jeans, and chunky platform heels. “I’ve got good news,” she wrote in the caption. “Dresses over jeans [are] back.”

Granted, the concept of ‘dresses over jeans’ may seem like a kitsch 90s throwback that you’re not keen to revisit. But look how good Alexa Chung looks! How you can possibly write off a trend when the end result is this compelling?

The key to nailing this look is in the balancing act: ultra-feminine on top, masculine down below. Opt for a babydoll or smock style—extra points for a Peter Pan collar—and pair it with a straight-leg jean in a lighter wash of indigo. Top it all off with a little extra height, courtesy of an on-trend chunky heel (Miu Miu IS doing particularly good ones right now) et voila! 90s renaissance by way of British It-girl.
