If you picture George Clooney at 63, you probably see the tux, the Nespresso, the yacht on Lake Como. What you should be picturing instead is an Oscar winner in muddy boots, perched on a tractor somewhere between rows of grapes and olive trees.

Clooney has made an 18th century farmhouse in Brignoles, in the Var region of Provence, France, his main base with Amal Clooney and their twins, Ella and Alexander. The house headlines like a fairy tale estate, but he keeps repeating the same unglamorous line about his French life: he drives a tractor and has, as he insists, “a normal life.”

From Kentucky Roots To a French Reality Check

Clooney grew up in Kentucky, surrounded by fields long before red carpets. As a young man, he ran from that rural script in search of Hollywood. Decades later, he is back on a farm, by choice, and almost sounds surprised about it himself.

He has called this chapter a kind of “reality check,” a reset from the hyper-curated existence that comes with global fame. The move to France in 2021 was not a dramatic flounce out of Hollywood so much as a parenting decision. “I was worried,” he revealed in a new interview. Worried about what a Los Angeles childhood would do to two very visible kids.

Clooney has been blunt about why he left Los Angeles. The paparazzi, the constant comparison to other celebrity children, the sense that his twins would be born into a fishbowl they never asked for. “Raising kids in that felt unfair,” he has suggested more than once.

France, and specifically rural Provence, offered something radically different. “Here people do not care about fame,” Clooney has said. In Brignoles, he is less movie star, more neighbor with good hair who happens to own a lot of vines.

Where Is George Clooney’s House In Provence

Brignoles sits in the Var, a beautiful pocket of Provence between the glitter of the Riviera and the postcard villages inland. Think hills striped with vineyards, stone farmhouses, cicadas on a loop. It is the kind of place where the boulanger remembers your order and the biggest spectacle is harvest season.

Local reports describe residents as politely unfazed. They clock George and Amal at the market, then go back to their tomatoes. For a man who spent decades being treated as an event, that everyday indifference is part of the appeal.

The property itself is called Domaine du Canadel, an 18th century estate the couple bought in 2021 for around $8.3 million. It sprawls over roughly 425 acres, with vineyards, an olive grove, a lake, woods, manicured gardens, a pool, tennis courts and guest houses threaded through the land.

At the center sits a classic Provençal bastide of pale stone and shuttered windows, the kind of house where linen sofas make sense and the light does half the decorating. It could easily have become a pure trophy home. Instead, Clooney talks about it like a working project, not a set piece.

What a “Normal” Day On the Clooney Farm Looks Like

Tractors, Chores And Time Offline

Here is where the fantasy gets dirt under its nails. Clooney is adamant that he does not just pose in front of the vines. “Here I drive the tractor, rake leaves, and spend entire days without looking at my phone,” Clooney has said with a laugh. That is not Method, it is maintenance.

He describes the physical rhythm of the place as the antidote to a life spent in trailers and on jets. Instead of a call sheet, there are weather reports and pruning schedules. Fame recedes when you are troubleshooting irrigation.

A Screen Light Childhood For Ella And Alexander

The estate is impressive, but the real luxury is how the twins live inside it. Clooney has talked about limiting screens, about Ella and Alexander helping with simple tasks instead of disappearing behind iPads. Dinner is not a kids’ table situation. The children sit with the adults, pass plates, join conversations.

“It is the best chance at a normal life,” he has said of the move. No bodyguards walking them to school gates, no long lenses over the hedge. On the farm, they can be the children who feed the dog and clear their dishes, not the children of George Clooney.

How Provence Fits Into the Clooneys’ Bigger Life

The Clooneys still have the fabled Lake Como villa, the English countryside home, the New York City apartment, the Kentucky ties. But by most accounts, the French farm has become their primary base, the place they circle back to between premieres and court appearances.

Clooney frames Domaine du Canadel less as a prize than as a tool. “My life is here, between Amal, my children, and nature,” he has said. It is where the performance drops, where he can be a husband in beat up jeans, not a headline.
