In Japan, the centuries-old art
of boro turns humble scraps of indigo cotton into
patchwork treasures, each patch a tiny chapter of family history.
This fall, a New York bag is telling a similar story.
On September 14, Bella Hadid paired a plaid shirt and a brown suede jacket with cuffed jeans and Ugg micro boots. On her shoulder sat the Coachtopia Alter/Ego bag, a slouchy patchwork of leather and suede pieces left over from making other Coach bags. It sold out almost instantly.
Then, on October 20, Lola Tung carried the very same design through Manhattan. A longtime Coachtopia loyalist and brand ambassador, she made it entirely her own. When two It girls fall for one bag, a love story is clearly brewing.
From a Manhattan Loft to Gen Z’s Shoulders
Coach was born in 1941 in a Manhattan loft, where a small group of artisans crafted leather goods by hand. In the 1960s, designer Bonnie Cashin brought playful colors and the now-iconic turnlock hardware. Her designs still enchant vintage hunters. This September, the brand celebrated its 85th birthday at New York Fashion Week, where Stuart Vevers unveiled the new Turnlock Tote. Since joining Coach in 2013, Vevers has turned heritage shapes into modern must-haves.
A Patchwork Bag With a Conscience
Launched in 2023, Coachtopia is the brand’s circular line, built from materials that would otherwise go to waste. The warm brown, taupe and beige patches give each Alter/Ego a boho soul. Lola’s stylist, Britt McCamey, played with contrast, pairing it with an all-black leather jacket and skirt by Sau Lee. Knee-high boots and delicate jewelry completed her late-night mood. Lola has also carried the black Alter/Ego Crescent on several occasions.
Why Coach Became Every Cool Girl’s Obsession
Bella helped spark the frenzy when she debuted the Brooklyn bag in 2024. Its slouchy shape quickly became a Gen Z status symbol. Loud logos have faded, and recognizable silhouettes have taken their place. Ambassadors Elle Fanning and Storm Reid adore the structured Tabby. Charli XCX has been spotted with the Brooklyn, while Emily Ratajkowski loves the roomy Empire Carryall. PinkPantheress, meanwhile, starred with the black Alter/Ego in the brand’s latest campaign.
How to Wear Your Slouchy Bag This Fall
Let a patchwork bag soften sharp tailoring, or pair it with denim and cozy boots for weekend errands. On chilly evenings, it looks just as charming over a camel coat. Personalize it with a charm or two, as Gen Z loves to do. Like a well-loved diary, the bag will only grow more beautiful with every adventure you tuck inside.
