Our nostalgia often takes us back to our twenties. That period teetering between the remnants of carefree adolescence and the looming responsibilities of adult life. Let’s be honest, those were also the years when we were at our physical peak.
However, don’t be fooled—according to a study, and our own personal experience (yes, we know a thing or two because we’re in our prime), the happiest years of our lives aren’t necessarily in our twenties. We’ve often been told that we should be living life to the fullest in that decade, yet science reveals that happiness actually blossoms afterward.
So, what do you think is the best time of our lives?
Science Speaks
Sure, in the early 2000s, Lorie Pester sang loudly and proudly about how “at 20, you’re invincible.” But according to a study published in Social Indicators Research, she might have been wrong. The happiest time of life actually starts in your early thirties—specifically between ages 30 and 34.
This conclusion came from a study led by Spanish economics professor Begoña Álvarez, who surveyed people over 50 across 13 countries. Participants were asked to reflect on when they felt the happiest, whether in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood.
After analyzing the results, researchers found that most respondents highlighted their early thirties as the happiest period. In contrast, ages 10 to 14 were marked as the least joyful.
Not 30 Yet? Or Far Beyond? Don’t Worry!
This study doesn’t mean happiness only arrives in your thirties. As the saying goes, life has its ups and downs. You can be just as happy in your twenties, thirties, or forties. If we all experienced life the same way, the world would be dreadfully boring. For those dreading turning 30, consider yourselves warned!
Being 30 is like being 20 again, but with better financial stability and a more stylish wardrobe. What more could you ask for?
